the field
A field is a sectored plane.
Divide a surface into sectors and let something move across it, and you have one. Once you have the definition the instances stop looking like a coincidence:
the wheel · twelve sectors of one plane. the navigation is the plainest field on the site, and it was drawn before the definition existed.
coupled oscillators · phase is a position on a circle. coherence is how tightly the population occupies one sector of it — that is what the order parameter measures.
the spectral bands · theta, alpha, beta, gamma are quartiles of an eigenvalue spectrum. a line cut into four sectors, and a reading taken from where the weight falls.
displacement itself · a ground state and a distance from it is already a plane with a centre. every sector is a direction you can be away in, and the cost of return depends on which.
Everything below is one or another of these: coupled oscillators, present only, no training and no memory. Instruments you can touch, games you can play, and the numbers that answer back.
Not to be confused with laserbrain. The field came first and the instrument took the name, so it is worth being exact: this is weather, and it is present-only — it holds no history, so it can tell you what it is like now and never where you have been. laserbrain is the opposite instrument: one fixed point held still, and the whole reading is your distance from it. The field is the environment. The instrument tells you where you are in it.
