Say "free energy" and two opposite ideas answer. The first is the perpetual-motion dream: a device that puts out more than it takes in, runs forever on nothing — the magnet wheel that never stops. The second is a precise, foundational quantity in physics: Helmholtz and Gibbs free energy, the portion of a system's energy actually available to do work. The first is a fantasy; the second runs your cells. They share a name and nothing else, and the whole honesty of the subject is in refusing to confuse them.
No machine makes energy
The first is dead, and stays dead. Energy is conserved — the first law; no closed cycle does net work for free, and no engine beats the Carnot bound — the second law. A static magnetic field does no net work around a loop, which is exactly why the "magnet motor" has failed every time for two centuries. The magnet never pays the bill. Any framework that claims otherwise has stopped being physics. This note claims nothing of the kind, and the rest of it only works because it doesn't.
What synchrony does
The real free energy is the energy available to do work — and the useful fact is that synchronization minimizes it. Coupled oscillators fall into phase because the locked state dissipates less; resonance is the low-energy configuration. A system slides into coherence the way water finds the floor. So synchrony is not a source. It is a way of wasting less of the energy already present.
The laser
The clearest proof is the laser. A bulb and a laser can burn the same watts. The bulb sprays light in every direction and every phase — scattered, weak. The laser puts every photon in step, and the same energy now cuts steel. No extra power entered. Only the phases changed. Coherence converted identical input into far more usable work, purely by ending the disorder. That is what "freeing" energy means: not adding to it, but recovering what disorder was throwing away.
The magnetic wheel
Force charges to turn in a magnetic field and the coordinated turning radiates coherence — real, built, ordinary. The cavity magnetron in a microwave: electrons swirl past a ring of cavities and emit coherent microwaves. The gyrotron: electrons gyrate in a strong field and emit coherent high power. The free-electron laser: electrons forced through a magnet array radiate tunable coherent light. Each is a "magnetic wheel laser." Each is powered, and each conserves energy. The magnet bends the path; the source pays the bill; out ≤ in. They make coherence by forcing the turn — not energy from nothing.
The mind minimizes it too
The pattern reaches inward. On Friston's free energy principle, a brain is a system that acts to minimize a quantity — variational free energy, a measure of surprise — and it does so by prediction, by bringing its internal rhythms into phase with the world. Mind, on this view, is coherence-seeking: a free-energy-minimizing engine made of neurons. The same move as the laser and the magnetron, run in tissue.
Free as in liberated
Coherence is leverage, not creation.
So the honest ledger never reads more-out-than-in. It reads out ≤ in, nothing wasted. There is no free lunch — there never was and never will be. But there is a real prize, and it is large: the dissipation you stop losing when scattered energy falls into phase. That is the only free energy there is. Free as in liberated, not as in gratis.
