A second term is a fixed reference outside the thing being measured — nothing reads its own state without one. Each protocol is that reference at a different scale: the spectral structure of a sentence, the fixed ground of an agent, the rhythm of another agent. Three protocols, and one wire that carries them.
Coherence is the correlation of two, held over time. Below two there is only displacement.
